Program Overview

A Steady Hand, A Fast Path Into Healthcare

Phlebotomists draw blood for lab testing, transfusions, research, and donations, and they do it dozens of times a day, on real people, under real time pressure. It is a role built on precision, patient comfort, and doing a small procedure correctly every single time.

HPI’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate program combines classroom instruction on anatomy, safety, and lab procedure with extensive hands-on practice, followed by a supervised clinical externship where you perform real venipunctures under direct supervision. That documented, hands-on experience is exactly what national certification exams look for.

Most employers expect national certification even where it is not legally required. Ohio does not mandate a state phlebotomy license, unlike a handful of other states, but a recognized credential from an organization such as the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is what actually opens hiring doors.

Because the role is narrowly focused and the training is intensive rather than long, phlebotomy is often the fastest way to go from no healthcare background to a paid clinical role.

Common Questions

About Phlebotomy at HPI

No. Ohio is not one of the states that requires a specific phlebotomy license. That said, the large majority of employers still expect national certification, so most graduates pursue it regardless of the legal minimum.

It depends on which national certification you pursue. Requirements are set by the certifying body, not by HPI, and typically range from around 30 up to 100 or more successful venipunctures and skin punctures, documented during supervised training. Your instructor will confirm the exact number for the certification path you choose.

Program length depends on HPI’s current schedule and format. Contact Admissions for the current class calendar and time commitment.

Both are widely recognized. The NHA’s Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credential is common among vocational school graduates, while the ASCP’s Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) credential is often preferred by hospital laboratories. Your admissions advisor can help you decide which fits your career goals.

Many students use phlebotomy as a way to get comfortable in a clinical environment before committing to a longer program like HPI’s Practical Nursing diploma. It builds real patient-contact experience and confidence with hands-on clinical skills.
