Program Policies

Standards & Expectations

HPI maintains clear policies governing academic progress, attendance, and professional conduct. Full details are available in the HPI School Catalog and Student Handbook.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a completion rate of at least 67% of attempted credits each evaluation period. Failure triggers academic warning, then financial aid probation if not corrected.

Attendance Policy

A minimum of 80% attendance is required in all didactic, laboratory, and clinical components. Absences beyond the allowed threshold may result in course failure. Students must notify HPI and clinical sites of any absence prior to the scheduled start time.

Professional Conduct

Students must adhere to HPI's Professional Conduct Standards and the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. Violations including dishonesty, substance use, or unsafe patient care are grounds for immediate program dismissal.

Grading Scale

A: 93–100% · B: 85–92% · C: 78–84% · D: 70–77% · F: Below 70%. A minimum grade of "C" (78%) is required in all nursing courses. Grades below 78% require the course to be repeated before progression.

Withdrawal & Leave of Absence

Students may request a Leave of Absence of up to 180 days for extenuating circumstances. Withdrawal triggers HPI's refund policy. Students who return may be required to complete additional remediation at faculty discretion.

Grievance Procedure

Grievances should first be raised with the instructor, then the Director of Education. Unresolved matters may be escalated to the School Director and, if necessary, to ABHES or SBCCS. All appeals must be submitted in writing within 10 business days of the disputed event.

Complete policy details are in the HPI School Catalog and Student Handbook, both available for download and on file at the HPI administrative office.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most often from prospective PN students - answered clearly.

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) completes a one-year vocational program and works under the supervision of RNs and physicians, performing tasks such as medication administration, wound care, patient monitoring, and patient education within a defined scope of practice. A Registered Nurse (RN) completes a two- or four-year degree with a broader scope and greater autonomy. Many LPNs later bridge to RN programs - HPI's PN diploma is designed with that pathway in mind.

The HPI PN program is fully in-person at our Columbus campus. Theory coursework, lab simulation, and clinical rotations all require physical attendance. Ohio Board of Nursing standards require substantial hands-on instruction that cannot be replicated online. Supplemental study materials are accessible through our Populi online portal.

HPI requires a minimum composite score of 58% on the ATI TEAS or an equivalent satisfactory score on the HESI A². If you don't meet the minimum on your first attempt, you may retake the exam after a mandatory 30-day waiting period. HPI offers study resources to help you prepare - contact admissions to access them.

Many HPI students work part-time during the program, and our evening cohort is specifically designed for working adults. However, the PN program is academically demanding — students typically invest 35–45 hours per week between class, lab, clinical, and study time. HPI strongly advises limiting outside employment during clinically intensive semesters. Our advisors can help you plan a realistic schedule.

After HPI submits your program completion documentation to the Ohio Board of Nursing, you'll apply for authorization to test (ATT). Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks. Once you receive your ATT, you schedule your NCLEX-PN date through Pearson VUE. HPI's PN 303 course prepares students specifically for this examination and includes full guidance on the licensure application process.

If Ohio Board of Nursing approval hasn’t been received by the scheduled cohort start date, HPI will not commence the PN program and will notify all conditionally enrolled students immediately. Any tuition deposits paid prior to approval will be fully refunded within 14 days. HPI is committed to full transparency and will provide regular status updates to all prospective students.
