The Next Step After Nurse Aide Training
HPI’s program follows the Ohio Board of Nursing’s standard curriculum for Medication Aide Training under Ohio Administrative Code Rule 4723-27, and covers 30 total clock hours: 14 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction, followed by 16 hours of supervised clinical practice with a Registered Nurse at your side the entire time.
Every skill is built around the Six Rights of Medication Administration: right resident, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, and right documentation. You will practice oral, topical, ophthalmic, otic, nasal, vaginal, rectal, inhaled, and transdermal medication routes, along with blood pressure and apical pulse measurement, before ever administering to a resident.
Graduates who complete all classroom, laboratory, and clinical requirements become eligible to sit for the Ohio Board-approved Medication Aide Examination, which includes both a written and a skills component.

About the Medication Aide Program
Yes. This program is only open to applicants who are currently listed in good standing on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry. If you are not yet an STNA, HPI’s Nurse Aide Training Program is the place to start.
No. A Certified Medication Aide always administers medications under the delegation and supervision of a licensed nurse, within the scope defined by Ohio law. It is an expanded role, not an independent one.
No, and the similar names can be confusing. A Medication Aide works in long-term care under nurse delegation, focused specifically on medication administration. A Medical Assistant works in outpatient settings like physician offices and clinics, with broader clinical and administrative duties. They are different credentials with different training paths.
You will need a minimum score of 80% on the final written examination, along with successful completion of every laboratory and clinical competency, before you can graduate and sit for the Ohio Board-approved certification exam.
HPI provides individualized remediation, including one-on-one tutoring, extra medication calculation practice, and repeat laboratory demonstrations, before you move on to clinical practice or graduation.
