Program Overview

Patient Care Skills You Can Put to Work Right Away

A State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) helps patients with the things a hospital stay or a long-term illness makes hard to do alone - bathing, eating, getting out of bed, moving around safely. It’s direct, physical, person-to-person work, and it’s where a lot of healthcare careers actually begin.

HPI’s Nurse Aide Training Program teaches those skills in the same skills lab used across our programs - real hospital beds, real equipment, real practice - before you move into a supervised clinical setting and work with actual patients under an instructor’s guidance.

Once you complete training and pass Ohio’s Nurse Aide Competency Exam, your name is added to the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry, and you’re eligible to work in nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living communities, and home health.

Several people on HPI’s own team hold STNA credentials themselves - it’s a program the school believes in enough to have lived it.

Common Questions

About the STNA Program

An STNA (State Tested Nurse Aide) provides basic daily-living support under the direction of nurses. An LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) has broader clinical training and can perform tasks like medication administration. HPI’s Practical Nursing program is a separate, longer diploma program - see the PN program page for details.

Exact length depends on HPI’s current schedule - contact Admissions for the current class calendar and time commitment.

Clinical training involves direct patient contact, so a background check is part of the admissions process. Your admissions advisor will walk you through the specific requirements.

Not as direct academic credit - HPI’s transfer credit policy only applies to Anatomy & Physiology I & II and Nutrition. That said, the hands-on patient care experience is genuinely useful background for anyone planning to apply to the Practical Nursing program later.

Once you’re on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry, you’re eligible to work in nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living communities, and home health agencies.
