How It Works

Learning in Real Healthcare Settings

Clinical experience is where classroom knowledge becomes practical skill. HPI students in clinical-based programs spend supervised time at approved healthcare facilities, applying what they have learned in the lab to real patient care, under the direct guidance of a nursing instructor.

Clinical sites are selected based on the approval of affiliating agencies, and the distance between HPI's campus and a clinical site can range from 10 to 75 miles. It is the student's responsibility to arrange reliable transportation to and from clinical sites, and to adjust their work schedule around clinical hours. Many students carpool to make this easier.

Because clinical schedules are built around facility availability and course requirements, accommodations generally cannot be made for distance, personal schedule preferences, or transportation limitations. This is explained clearly during orientation so there are no surprises once clinical rotations begin.

Supervision stays close throughout: no more than one instructor is assigned for every ten students in the clinical setting, so guidance is hands-on and direct rather than distant oversight.
